Grapevine Magazine County Naturally segment featuring Paul Sokoloff, March 4, 2026 If you’ve never heard of Axel Heiberg Island, you’re not alone. This remarkable island in the Canadian high Arctic contains the remnants of a prehistoric forest that grew about 40 million years ago. As well, there are important archaeological sites along the shore. Now part of the island will become a territorial park to protect both the ancient forest and the archeological sites. The first step in creating a park is always doing an inventory of the plants, animals, birds and insects on the site. Paul Sokoloff of the Canadian Museum of Nature was part of the plant inventory. He’ll be talking to Pamela Stagg about the plants — modern and from 40 million years ago.
